"Not enough for the forensic boards recert" 2009-05-09
By J. PARKER (Phoenix, AZ, USA)
The book is okay, but doesn't really cover all the topics needed for the forensic boards recert exam, for which I thought it was written. The various contributors are all the Titans of forensic psychiatry, and all have something useful to say, but the book disappoints as it falls short of its intended purpose.

"The book every psychiatrist (and medical practitioner) should read." 2008-04-23
By Mudassir Ali (North Easton, MA, USA)
I found this book as an excellent resource. It is not for just forensic psychiatrists but for all psychiatrists in particular and will be helpful to any medical practitioner. It is well-written with clinical vignettes to make the points crystal clear. Easy read and very helpful in saving the day for the pschiatrists who testify in court as expert witness. But that is only one of numerous ways this book may help the psychiatrists.

I will rate it as five stars ***** without hesitation.

Psychiatrists are distinct among mental health professionals in that their knowledge and training allow them to be the ultimate integrators of the biological and psychosocial perspectives underlying diagnostic understanding and treatment. This integrative focus is built into the fourth edition of this encyclopedic—and now classic—textbook. Three years in the making, it has undergone more comprehensive and significant change than any previous edition.

This densely informative textbook comprises 40 scholarly, authoritative chapters by an astonishing 89 experts and combines junior and senior authors alike to enhance the rich diversity and quality of clinical perspectives. The editors have added a chapter on interpersonal therapy and updated all chapters to include the latest references and research findings. Selected chapters have been completely rewritten by new authors. This wide-ranging reference is divided into four main parts: the theoretical bases of psychiatry, from genetics and normal development to various psychiatric assessment tools; psychiatric disorders, including those usually first diagnosed in infancy, childhood, or adolescence; the latest treatments, from psychopharmacology and electroconvulsive therapy to hypnosis and various types of psychotherapy; and special clinical topics such as suicide, violence, women's mental health, cultural psychiatry, the law and psychiatry, and ethics and psychiatry.

Although crafted primarily for advanced psychiatry residents and practicing psychiatrists, this highly practical volume (and its companion Electronic DSM-IV-TR Plus on CD-ROM) remains a standard educational reference for physicians of other specialties, including family practice, internal medicine, pediatrics, and neurology.

"Solid clinical single-volume textbook on Psychiatry" 2006-11-02
By Psychiatrist (Alabama)
Well-organized, thorough, comprehensive, thoughtful, practical & expert-written. It is a useful and readable book, relatively evidence-based for a textbook, and not simply filled with lore, or extraneous information. The best single-volume textbook on Psychiatry that I am aware of.

Both scholarly and practical, the third edition of this exceptional textbook continues its tradition of integrating clinical wisdom and scientific research to improve patient care and advocacy for children and families, commemorating Dr. Jerry Wiener's immense contributions to the field of child and adolescent psychiatry.

Comprehensive, yet not so lengthy or detailed that it would discourage a resident in training or a busy practitioner looking for an update, this well-organized reference focuses on clinical issues (based on empirical research) and is thus extremely practical for everyday use.

Written by 88 distinguished experts, each of the 56 chapters in this informative work presents a summary of a core topic, blending clinical experience with evidence-based practices in assessment and treatment. Divided into 10 parts, this Third Edition has been revised and updated throughout to keep pace with accelerating progress in research on developmental psychopathology.

Clearly organized along diagnostic principles as presented in DSM-IV-TR, this textbook combines clinical wisdom with the latest in research. In addition to the many chapters that have been refreshed, some by adding junior faculty as coauthors, this third edition contains six new chapters and ten completely rewritten chapters with new principal authors.

  • Two new chapters on economic issues and the role of culture and ethnicity.
  • Three new authors on diagnostic interviews (structured and semistructured), rating scales, and psychological and neuropsychological testing
  • New chapter on genetic testing
  • The latest on schizophrenia and psychotic disorders and mood disorders in adolescents
  • Four new authors on adjustment (and reactive) disorders, substance abuse disorder, and physical and sexual abuse of children
  • Inpatient and partial hospitalization, residential milieu treatment, and group psychotherapy
The third edition of this contemporary core textbook continues to be an invaluable addition to the libraries of generalist and specialist alike, from medical students and psychiatry residents to practitioners (e.g., child and adolescent psychiatrists, pediatricians, family physicians, general psychiatrists, advanced practice child psychiatric nurses, psychiatric social workers) and family law attorneys.

Psychiatry has emerged as a burgeoning scientific field with major advances in etiology and treatment of several disorders. Just as there was excitement in the anatomic advances that took place a hundred years ago when Emil Kraepelin and his collaborators took on the enormous task of classification of psychiatric disorders based on rational scientific thinking, new advances in genetics, biochemistry, neuroanatomy and pharmacotherapy of mental disorders have brought us even closer to a better understanding of complex disorders like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression and even autism. The major goal of the previous edition of this classic book was to update the busy clinician, psychiatric resident and medical student with the most up-to-date information on etiology, diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders. This goal remains the focus of the third edition of this book. In this updated and expanded edition, the reader is provided with the most contemporary information and literature supported by a close survey of the field. Several new chapters dealing with new concepts in biology and treatment of mental disorders have been added. This new edition of this classic title, with its focus on biologic and medical aspects of psychiatry, will continue to be of significant help to all interested in the scientific practice of psychiatry.
