"Probably the best option but over-priced and full of errors" 2009-11-01
By RK
Let me begin by saying that this is probably the best review option for the psychiatry shelf/subject exam. That being said, the authors didn't have to work very hard to put this book together. They essentially summarized the DSM criteria for the various disorders, the "etiology" section is almost identical for most conditions (genetic and psychosocial/environmental factors may contribute to most conditions: surprise!), and treatment is not addressed in much detail (other than two chapters on psychotherapy and psychopharm). Given that perspective, I would have thought they could devote slightly more time to proof-reading before going to press. The inconsistencies, inaccuracies, typos, and major editing errors start on the back cover and continue throughout the book. As with all of the First Aid books, the condensed descriptions can be misleading and incorrectly characterize certain DSM criteria - usually these problems are clarified in the sidebar boxes, so read carefully. The cognitive disorders chapter is so disorganized (an understatement) that it is as if they wrote two versions of the chapter, cut them in half with scissors, and randomly spliced them together. Both delirium and dementias are addressed in two different places in the same chapter for no apparent reason. The most frustrating thing about this book is that it gives the impression that the First Aid authors don't respect the $44 that they ask us to fork over. Fortunately, Amazon's price is a bit cheaper. Either way, for that much, they could afford to hire an editor or two. I hesitate to give this book four stars, but when you're pressed for study time, it's probably the best one-stop option for shelf studying. First Aid, please show our brains and bank accounts more respect next time around!

 "Watch out for errors!" 2009-09-11
By Marvin A. Scott (Vermont, USA)
As with ALL of the First Aid books, I've noticed more than an acceptable number of errors and typos. The only value of these books is that they organize facts for quick review. I would not ever rely on them for learning the information the first time around.

 "great book" 2009-09-08
By William Largen
read this book like 3-4 times the week before your clerkship test and you'll do good. Pay particular attention to time spans (4 weeks vs 3 years) when you are studying or doing practice questions. Complete and all you have to know.

This is a great review book for psychiatrc clerkship and also the exam. Used it for my psych rotation and it came in handy. It has chapters on all the major psych illness and also psychopharmacology.

Highly recommended.

 "Succint Adjuvant" 2009-03-02
By Rosalyn Franklin
I used this product along with case files psych. I sometimes referred to the Kaplan and Saddock book and found that FA psych is like having a high yield version of this very book. I was expecting FA to be high yield and was pleased to see it take after the book that both my school and attending had wanted me to be following (ie - Kaplan and Saddock).

The best thing about this book for me are the mini cases in the side notes. They were a nice way to quickly review subjects I didn't want to spend a lot of time on. I am little suprised that some of the mnemonics from FA step 1 were not present, but most are.

The only negative (and this doesn't just pertain to this book)is that I don't think there is really any one good book to completely help you ace this clerkship, but by adding case files psych I was pleased.
